Mani Shankar Aiyar must apologize: Rahul Gandhi on ‘neech’ remark row

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday distanced itself from senior leader Mani Shankar Aiyar‘s derogatory remarks aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with vice-president Rahul Gandhi exhorting Aiyar to tender an unequivocal apology.

“I do not appreciate the tone and language used by Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar to address the PM. Both the Congress and I expect him to apologise for what he said,” Rahul said in a tweet.

Asserting that Aiyar’s comments did not reflect the Congress party’s views or culture, Rahul also pointed out that the BJP was crying foul when they too have frequently adopted unparliamentary language against the Congress and its leaders.

“BJP and PM routinely use filthy language to attack the Congress party. The Congress has a different culture and heritage,” he said.

The Gandhi scion’s reaction came minutes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi disparaged Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar for calling him a “neech aadmi” who resorts to dirty politics.

PM Modi claimed that Aiyar’s derogatory remarks reflected a ‘Mughlai mindset’ that viewed everyone as “neech” and said the Congress party’s feudal attitude will prove to be their downfall.

“I have nothing to say on a ‘wise’ Congress leader calling me ‘Neech’. This is the Congress mindset. They have their language and we have our work. People will answer them through the ballot box,” Modi said at a public rally in poll-bound Gujarat.

Earlier in the day, Mani Shankar Aiyar had lashed out at PM Modi for criticizing the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, and dubbed the Prime Minister a “neech aadmi” for playing dirty politics.

“Mujhko lagta hai ki ye aadmi bahut neech kisam ka aadmi hai, isme koi sabhyata nahi hai, or aise mauke par is kisam ki gandi rajniti karne ki kya avashyakta hai?” Aiyar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
