Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL), the company that administers Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), received the prestigious ‘Sustainability Carbon Management Practice’ Award at the India Sustainability Leadership Summit held recently at Taj Lands End. The esteemed award, presented by Mr. Sumit Sabharwal, CEO, Excelity Global and Prof. Chetan Wakalkar, Group Director, Indira Group of Institutes, was conferred on Dr. Narendra Hosabettu, Executive Vice President, Environment, MIAL, for the company’s contribution in the areas of sustainability and environmental management.
Acknowledged for exemplary work in the areas of Green House Gas accounting & Management at CSIA, MIAL has continuously demonstrated its leadership in GHG emission management. Along with being the first airport in India to get ISO 14064-1:2006, MIAL, in 2011, became the first Indian airport accredited to Level 1 (Mapping) stage of Airport Carbon Accreditation program by ACI. In the year 2013 MIAL successfully upgraded its accreditation to Level 2 (Reduction) and in the year 2015 MIAL successfully upgraded to ACA Level 3 (Optimisation).
World CSR congress is a Not-For-Profit Organization advocating for Sustainable Leadership. The organization in association with Sustainable Maharashtra spearhead various activities in the focus areas like climate change, water reduction, CSR, Sustainability reporting, Renewable energy, Sustainable education etc.
Other initiatives by MIAL
The 1,060 kWp solar power plant installed by MIAL is generating about 4,400 units per day. Annually it will generate 16.24 lakh units of electricity. This will help in reducing about 1,330 tonnes of carbon emission annually
MIAL is equipped with 15 MLD sewage treatment plants. The sewage generated from terminal buildings and landslide activities are being treated at state-of-art STPs for Terminal 1, 2 and cargo
The company has replaced its less efficient assets with high efficient ones to save on electricity consumption. More than 300 light bulbs have been replaced with 45W LED bulbs resulting in lowered perimeter lighting energy consumption by 40 percent
The terminal at MIAL has been designed to maximize use of natural light. The central lobbies are provided with open glass heat reflector ceilings and walls to utilize maximum sunlight while inhibiting maximum heat. This helps in curtailing air conditioning load during day light.
